A letter

Ms. Lee is an elementary school teacher who has utilized the buddhadharma to better educate her students. One way to teach moral discipline to her students is first to remind them that ‘they are originally good persons’—which is an easily adapted expression of "All men are buddhas."—and to have them recollect this whenever they meet a trying situation.

The following letter was sent to a teacher who was teaching moral discipline, by the mother of a child who was made anxious by his abnormal habits.

Dear teacher,
My child had two habits before he entered elementary school. As a parent, I have worried so much. One is sniffling, and the other is pulling up his pants constantly. At first, I thought he had a problem in his nose, so I took him to the hospital several times only to cause hardship for him from taking medicine. And for some time, he constantly pulled up his pants, though his pants did not slip down.
His unstable actions made me very worried, so one day I came upon the thought that it may be due to the traffic accident he had experienced when he was six years old. Following the advice of a well-known herbal doctor, I took him to a child neurologist to let him be diagnosed, but was told that he was fine. In the meantime, after passing the mid-term of the first semester, his habit gradually weakened, and at last he no longer did any abnormal behavior. As a parent, I was so happy that he had become perfectly normal, so I asked him about it. He said he had learned mind-checking and that it was so good. I then asked him how to do that. He said that first he thinks; “I am originally a good man. So I can do and tolerate whatever,” and closes his eyes calmly and looks at his mind with one hand resting on his chest.

I was so pleased. Through mind-checking, he had not only broken his bad habits, but he also works hard in whatever he tries to do. I thought, “This is a real and authentic education.” I was proud that my child was growing up following the proper path, and so I would like to thank you, Sunlee Kim and Jungkok elementary school, for teaching my child well.
I hope you will teach all the future leaders well, and continue the mind-checking technique.
All parents hope that their children will grow up well.  Again I thank you, the teacher who enlightened children’s minds.
